I can’t believe it’s only been two weeks since I left the busy streets of Miami, Florida behind and embarked on this incredible solo journey to Seville, Spain, a city that’s now my home away from home. My excitement was obvious, and I knew I was in for something truly special.

I’ll never forget that moment when I saw Seville. The city greeted me with its enchanting blend of historic charm and vibrant life. The cobblestone streets whispered tales of centuries gone by, with a promise of adventure.

Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed by Miriam, my house mom.  She introduced me to her dog, Bruno, a friendly and loyal companion who, distant at first, quickly became my furry friend. Settling into my room was a mix of excitement and comfort. The compact yet cosy space became a place where I could unwind and reflect on the day’s discoveries. The Seville breeze that streamed through the large window carried with it the sounds of the city that spoke of Sevillian life.

My adventure began with a warm welcome and orientation that provided me with a comprehensive overview of the college and the city. I was introduced to iconic sites like the Alcázar, the Seville Cathedral, and the mesmerising Plaza de España. The blend of Moorish and Renaissance architecture was an awe-inspiring sight. Wandering through the maze-like streets of Barrio Santa Cruz felt like a journey through history, every corner revealing new stories and surprises.

As part of our welcome week activities organised by ICS, we explored the streets surrounding the cathedral and Plaza de España. The charm of the city enveloped us as we strolled through these historic areas. We couldn’t resist stopping at a local café to savour fresh and delicious churros con chocolate, a delightful introduction to Seville’s culinary delights.

Speaking of food, I have to mention the delicious meals my house mom prepares. It’s like a new culinary adventure every day as she serves up a variety of different dishes from Potaje to Tortilla. The warmth of her home-cooked meals adds to the sense of belonging in this city.

And if you’re a coffee lover, Seville has got you covered. The city offers a wide variety of coffee options, from the classic Cafe con leche to the indulgent Bon-Bon and the robust Carajillo. Each cup of coffee tells a story of Seville’s vibrant culture, and you’ll find your perfect brew in no time in one of the many cafe’s nearby ICS.

With ICS’s welcome week activities and cultural trips, I got plenty of opportunities to ease into the relaxed culture of Seville, and Seville’s vibrant festival culture quickly became a highlight of my journey. The breathtaking performances of flamenco were nothing short of spectacular. The way the performers expressed their passion and culture left me in awe. Even the journey to the venue was a remarkable experience, as the thought of walking alongside historic buildings, bustling marketplaces, and streets in the heart of Seville left me in awe.

One unforgettable Sunday, we even ventured to Portugal’s São Rafael beach, where the sun, sea, and sand took my breath away. Now although this was separate from ICS, we got the chance to explore a neighbouring country, a bonus.

Language was a bit of a challenge at first, but I was determined to break through the language barrier. So I memorised essential Spanish phrases and eagerly embraced unique phrases like “Hola!”,” Buenas”,”Bale” etc…And enrolling in Spanish classes wasn’t just about learning the language; it was about connecting with the culture on a deeper level.

Art and culture are everywhere in Seville. While I haven’t visited the Museum of Fine Arts yet, I’ve heard about the brilliance of Spanish artworks from my Spanish teacher in my beginning Spanish class. I hope to see their works in person after our tour of the Cathedral at the Fine Arts Museum. The influence of Sevillian painters, such as Diego Velázquez, has enriched my understanding and anticipation.

In Seville, time has its own rhythm, there is a relaxed attitude towards punctuality that I’ve come to appreciate. Warm greetings with hugs and the surprising lack of tipping practices added to the charm of everyday life. The siesta, a midday break, is a cherished part of the Sevillian way of life, and it’s become a precious moment of reflection and relaxation for me. Adapting to Seville’s unique daily schedule has been an eye-opener, reminding me to savour life’s simple pleasures.

And thanks to the siestas, Seville’s nightlife is a world of its own, and I’ve been relishing every moment. From disco clubs like Alphonso and Maquiavelo to the lively tapas bars and rooftop terraces, each evening feels like a celebration. Late-night strolls along the Guadalquivir River have become a personal tradition, and the city’s vibrancy never ceases to amaze me. And getting to these places is a breeze in Seville, thanks to options like SEVICI bicycle rentals and the reliable Tussam bus network. Also, catching a taxi is as simple as waving your hand, and it’s a great way to get around the city

.Of course, health and safety are top priorities.  While Spain has universal healthcare, it’s not free for us as foreigners. Therefore, be sure to carry your insurance card at all times, and in case of an emergency, make sure to seek treatment at clinics or hospitals in-network with your insurance.

As I reflect on these two incredible weeks, I can’t help but feel that Seville has become my new life for the upcoming months. The experiences, the people, the traditions – they’ve all woven themselves into the fabric of my being, creating lasting memories and opening doors to personal and cultural growth. I can’t wait to see where the rest of this adventure takes me.
